Enjoy portable electronics without battery fires

Picture
Soteria Battery Innovation Group Members are dedicated to enabling portable electric power without the risk of fires, no matter the circumstances.  Our material architecture  eliminates the spark on the inside of a battery that can cause fires.

We are different. Our goal is to ensure that these materials are available to every battery manufacturer with local production from a broad supply base so that every device, whether a hearing aid or a electric bus, can have a battery that is virtually impossible to self-ignite.

We will ensure that these materials are used responsibly by setting world-class safety standards so that you, the device manufacturer or consumer, will know that you have the safest electric power source, no matter what.

Eliminate Lithium Battery Self- Ignition with Paradigm-Shifting Materials

Today’s lithium batteries are made with the wrong combination of materials: robust metal current collectors capable of delivering the energy of the entire battery to a defect or dendrite quickly, and thermally unstable separators that cannot withstand the heat generated with these massive current densities.

The Soteria architecture will change that, by using thermally stable separators made from advanced fibers, and combining them with current collectors that are engineered to be unstable under the giant current densities associated with internal shorts. The architecture will provide the same electrical protection as a fuse on the inside of each battery.

Soteria Current Collector

With a Soteria metalized film current collector, dangerous high current densities will not be tolerated. The thin metal coating is thick enough to provide all of the normal battery operations. But when the very high currents associated with defects and dendrites occur, the metal oxidizes and the substrate melts, breaking the electrical connection and isolating the defect from the rest of the cell.  In addition, by eliminating unnecessary heavy metal, the battery is significantly lighter.
  • Up to 20% weight reduction of lithium ion batteries
  • Elimination of lithium battery safety events

Dreamweaver Separator

Award-winning third-generation battery separators are made from materials that are thermally stable, so will not melt or shrink under the intense current associated with an internal short.  This increased stability keeps the electrodes separate even in the presence of conductive defects, greatly enhancing the safety of the system.  Coupled with the Soteria Current Collector, they deliver the ultimate safe and light architecture for lithium ion batteries.

An Industry Consortium

Picture
The Soteria Battery Innovation Group is bringing together the talents, expertise, market presence and brands of key advanced technology companies who will work together to bring the architecture forward.  Together, we will:
  • Set up a limited number of world-class advanced materials producers as licensees who will manufacture and sell the components into the lithium ion battery market.
  • Develop and adopt the needed equipment and materials to smoothly integrate the technology into the existing lithium battery and automotive supply chains.
